"For the ultimate 50's eyes try using black liquid eyeliner. Begin by positioning yourself in front of a mirror in a place where you can rest your elbow on a steady surface. Using one hand, lift up the brow firmly and with the other hand begin lining. Try to do it in one slow sweep (don't worry about it being perfect at this stage) and at the outer corners lift up and away to create the flick.

When you have finished the first eye stand back looking straight ahead to see the length and height of the flick. To replicate this perfectly on the other eye first draw a dot at the highest point as a guide.

To finish off, for an absolutely perfect finish, use a matt black powder eye shadow with a slightly damp eye lining brush. Again look at yourself straight in the mirror and you will be able to see where it needs more work, filling in gaps, smoothing edges and extending here and there.

Liquid eyeliner only looks good when applied well so it's worth putting the extra effort in. With a bit of practice you can master that amazingly chic and glamorous look which has been a classic since the Hollywood starlets of the 50's.

The best way to make all types of liner last is to keep the lids clean apart from a thin layer of powder or primers specifically for lids before you begin lining. Avoid using foundation on the lids.

The biggest mistake people make when applying eyeliner is not to get close enough to the lashes. My pet hate is when I see a strip of pale flesh between the lashes and the liner; it's a very unattractive look and defeats the object of eyeliner which is to define the eye. The way to avoid this is to always lift the brow firmly as you apply."
